An assessment of the industrial cogeneration market for parabolic dish systems
The value analysis technique used is straightforward. Maximum allowable life-cycle system cost for the cogeneration system is determined as the sum of the present value of fuels displaced plus the present value of revenues from exported power. Each conventional fuel displaced is described by a unit cost in the first year, a uniform annual consumption rate, and a uniform annual escalation rate for unit cost. Attractancy of Racemic Disparlure and Certain Analogues to Male Gypsy Moths and the Effect of Trap Placement
Traps hung on small trees of 3-8 cm diam and baited with racemic epoxides, hydrocarbons and other analogues related to racemic cis-7,8-epoxy-2-methyloctadecane (disparlure) resulted in male Lymantria dispar L. (gypsy moth) catches statistically indistinguishable from those of unbaited traps. Only (±)-disparlure yielded trap catches statistically above the level of unbaited traps. However, trap placement on trees of ca. 0.5 m diam produced appreciable trap catches, even in unbaited trap
Neuropsychological Outcomes of U.S. Veterans with Report of Remote Blast-Related Concussion and Current Psychopathology
This study explored whether remote blast-related MTBI and/or current Axis I psychopathology contribute to neuropsychological outcomes among OEF/OIF veterans with varied combat histories. OEF/OIF veterans underwent structured interviews to evaluate history of blast-related MTBI and psychopathology and were assigned to MTBI (n = 18), Axis I (n = 24), Co-morbid MTBI/Axis I (n = 34), or post-deployment control (n = 28) groups. A main effect for Axis I diagnosis on overall neuropsychological performance was identified (F(3,100) = 4.81; p = .004), with large effect sizes noted for the Axis I only (d = .98) and Co-morbid MTBI/Axis I (d = .95) groups relative to the control group. The latter groups demonstrated primary limitations on measures of learning/memory and processing speed. The MTBI only group demonstrated performances that were not significantly different from the remaining three groups. These findings suggest that a remote history of blast-related MTBI does not contribute to objective cognitive impairment in the late stage of injury. Impairments, when present, are subtle and most likely attributable to PTSD and other psychological conditions. Implications for clinical neuropsychologists and future research are discussed. The Supercooling of a Nematic Liquid Crystal
We investigate the supercooling of a nematic liquid crystal using fluctuating
non-linear hydrodynamic equations. The Martin-Siggia-Rose formalism is used to
calculate renormalized transport coefficients to one-loop order. Similar
theories for isotropic liquids have shown substantial increases of the
viscosities as the liquid is supercooled or compressed due to feedback from the
density fluctuations which are freezing. We find similar results here for the
longitudinal and various shear viscosities of the nematic. However, the two
viscosities associated with the nematic director motion do not grow in any
dramatic way; i.e.\ there is no apparent freezing of the director modes within
this hydrodynamic formalism. Instead a glassy state of the nematic may arise
from a ``random anisotropy" coupling of the director to the frozen density.Comment: Late
Formation of disclination lines near a free nematic interface
We have studied the nucleation and the physical properties of a -1/2 wedge
disclination line near the free surface of a confined nematic liquid crystal.
The position of the disclination line has been related to the material
parameters (elastic constants, anchoring energy and favored anchoring angle of
the molecules at the free surface). The use of a planar model for the structure
of the director field (whose predictions have been contrasted to those of a
fully three-dimensional model) has allowed us to relate the experimentally
observed position of the disclination line to the relevant properties of the
liquid crystals. In particular, we have been able to observe the collapse of
the disclination line due to a temperature-induced anchoring angle transition,
which has allowed us to rule out the presence of a real disclination line near
the nematic/isotropic front in directional growth experiments.

The Origin and Distribution of Diffuse Hot Gas in the Spiral Galaxy NGC 3184
Deep Chandra exposures reveal the presence of diffuse X-ray emission with a
luminosity of 1.3x10^{39} ergs s^{-1} from the spiral galaxy NGC 3184. This
appears to be truly diffuse thermal emission distinct from the low-luminosity
LMXB emission. While the unresolved emission from older LMXBs is more uniformly
distributed across the galaxy, the diffuse X-ray emission is concentrated in
areas of younger stellar populations and star forming regions. The surface
brightness of the diffuse emission over the spiral arms is five times greater
than in off-arm regions, and eight times brighter in H II regions than in non-H
II regions. Spectral fits to the diffuse thermal emission are consistent with a
low temperature component, T ~ 1.5 x 10^6 K, plus a higher temperature

Status of the PICASSO Project
The Picasso project is a dark matter search experiment based on the
superheated droplet technique. Preliminary runs performed at the Picasso Lab in
Montreal have showed the suitability of this detection technique to the search
for weakly interacting cold dark matter particles. In July 2002, a new phase of
the project started. A batch of six 1-liter detectors with an active mass of
approximately 40g was installed in a gallery of the SNO observatory in Sudbury,
Ontario, Canada at a depth of 6,800 feet (2,070m). We give a status report on
the new experimental setup, data analysis, and preliminary limits on
